Principal Introduction
Hello Bel Air Families,
I am Yvanna Wheeler, the proud new principal of Bel Air Elementary School. I am excited to transition to Bel Air. I will be at Riverview Middle School Monday and Tuesday. I will be here at Bel Air, Wednesday through Friday. This brief time at the end of the school year will allow me the chance to get to know our students, staff, families and culture of our amazing school community.
I have prior experience as a teacher, vice principal and principal. I have been an educator for 24 years and am a mother of four. I understand that each child has their own educational journey. I appreciate the opportunity to share your child’s educational journey with you.
As we are approaching the end of the school year, we will continue to create an environment where EVERY child meets or exceeds the academic standards that are preparing our students to be college or career ready. We continue our focus on the three expectations of all members of the Bel Air Community:
BE SAFE
BE RESPECTFUL
BE RESPONSIBLE
I will be setting up time to gather community input and listen to our families hopes and needs of our school. I will hold a brief introduction meeting before our classes are open during our Open House, Tuesday, May 9. I look forward to building a partnership with all families to create an engaging and supportive school experience for all students.
Your Principal,
Yvanna Wheeler
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE ANNOUNCEMENT
Effective April 10, 2023, if a student is chronically absent, the parent/guardian must provide medical verification for future absences to be excused. Once a student is identified as chronically absent, they will be required to follow these procedures until the end of the school year. Chronic absenteeism means that a student has missed 10 percent or more of school days(to date) due to absences for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions. Absences can cause students to have difficulty learning to read by their third-grade benchmark assessments, affect academic achievement in middle school, and affect student motivation to do the work required to graduate from high school.
Remember: Every school day counts. Attend today, achieve for a lifetime!
Mr. Humphrey's last day!
Our awesome Principal, Mr. Humphrey, has gone on to be the Administrator of Expanded Learning Opportunity Programs with MDUSD. On Wednesday, March 22, Bel Air celebrated Mr. Humphrey with a surprise cheering squad and cake. Tears were shed, hugs and high-fives were exchanged, and the entire school turned out to thank him for his brilliant leadership. Best wishes and three cheers for Mr. Humphrey!
